As our small contribution to world car free day, this particular street was closed for traffic this morning . It was really nice and relaxing change crossing the streets without having a care for traffic. However, on the other street (behind me) the traffic was quite hectic!

Yellow rose outside the theatre...the area was quiet and peaceful when I snaped this.

While just at the back of the theatre, at a square, youngsters were gathered to do an afternoon of skateboarding. Yup, it was the opposite of peaceful...still it is nice to see them :)

I was told Csiperó is a type of bird species. Well, am too lazy to verify that ..haha.

Right now, Kecskemét is hosting Csiperó 2008 - 10th Future of Europe International Children and Youth Meeting. Read more about the history of the association here .

Between June 6-13 , 2008 , there are hive of activities and performances by participating countries around the town of Kecskemét. Check out the programmes schedule on the same link given above !

The following are some shots taken during the few times I managed to catch some street shows...

French brass band performing at the pedestrian. They began with tunes from the James Bond series...very cool !

On the other side while the brass band was playing, this non-mechanical rocking "boat" was entertaining those who 're not afraid of motion sickness !

Then this high wheel bicycle rode by...wow ! so many things happening at once !

Hopefully i'll be posting more from this event. Perhaps the laser show and fireworks from the closing ceremony ..they'd be nice :)

Unexpected

Thanks to May / June wedding season, we chanced upon this Roman Catholic church (located at town square) was wide open before a wedding ceremony. I think there are certain hours that allow tourists into this church. Since we haven't had the opportunity to do so yet, it was really a lovely surprise!

Background
The painitng seen in the church span several centuries. The painitng of the high altar was painted by Ferenc József Falkoner in 1793. The frescos of the arches were made my Ignác Roskovics between 1900 and 1903.

Here's a gallery of this morning May day walk. The costumes were gorgeous, enthusiastic performances, lots of folk music, a chicky stiltman, yeah it was memorable!

Outdoor exhibition

Quick, go and catch this rather interesting mini exhibition infront of the cultural centre as it runs from today (Apr08) til Apr11 only.
The topic concerns the disables (mental and physical) as well as the homeless. These wonderful works were created by young artists from a local workshop ; while the event is organised by Vondafone Hungary Foundation .

Children / Pupils all over presented their handi-craft decorated with the national colours today at the main square. I had a nice time observing particularly a mini-windmill design ; which was turning beatifully when the wind blows.

The event is to commemorate the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 (March 15).

Sunday's breakfast is something I look forward to all week :) It involves walking 15 minutes to the local market for some Hungarian-style crepes (palacsinta) and potato donut (lángos). After that, you burn the fat off by more walking to shop for the week's groceries. Ah, perfect!

If you're the kind of person who enjoys seeing memorials and statues, you will not be dissapointed in Kecskemét. For instance this war memorial, I absolutely love its dimensions. You can find it near the theatre house.

This synagogue is no longer a place of worship due to it was unclaimed after WWII ; therefore, it is currently use as a conference centre and café.

It is one of the majestic landmarks in Kecskemét across the street from Cifra Palota on Szabadság square. According to the town's guide, the building was built between 1864 and 1871 in moorish-style

At Szövetség tér

This morning the weather was mildly cold, great for a walk. So, after having the usual sunday lángos , we head toward Szechenyi Város (suburb of approx. 30k) . The purpose was to take a peep at the area where we found a nice flat for sale. Then along the way we saw this interesting looking statues at Szövetség tér (tér = square) ..the name is unknown to us. Any kecskeméti can help to identify?

200 year-old office building

When you enter the 200 year-old admin. building it is as if you've gone back in time . As you walk up the staircase you get to see the different elements and styles of architecture. Our visit (due to paper works) is far too short to fully explore the building, but I'm sure we shall return very soon for more.

The first Piarist friars

The first Piarist friars arrived at the town in 1714....

Reading the town's guide, I learnt that this secondary grammar school has been operating for almost 3 centuries! The school was built next to the monastery between the two world wars following the plans of the professor of the Technical university, Dezso Hüthl. It is of Baroque style from outside. I have to find a chance to go inside to see how it is on the inside!

End of 2007 marked the 5th month living in Kecskemét for us. We're still looking for our own home ; hence, we couldn't commit to daily postings as this blog was originally set to do. Hopefully when things are settled, will be able to venture into the many attractions this town has to offer.

Kecske means "goat" ; while mét refers to "district " in Hungarian.

Kecskemét – the capital of Bács-Kiskun County – fusing all the beauty and values of the Great Plain is situated in the middle of Hungary, approximately 85 kms from Budapest. - source city portal
